New studies conducted in The United Kingdom has discovered instead of using antibiotics, honey and some over the counter drugs should be used first by people suffering from cough.
Contrary to people’s belief, antibiotics do not improve cough but it without an underlying condition usually improve on it own.
It should be recalled World Health Organization (WHO) has directed health practitioners to reduce the use of antibiotics as overuse of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance.
Antibiotics can be used for drugs if there is an underlying infection causing a persistent cough. It can also be used when there is a risk of complications or a weakened immune system.
However, honey should not be used on infants less than a year old as it contains a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum which can lead to infant botulism, a life-threatening condition.
If a cough condition worsens or leads to a short breath, It is advisable to consult a doctor.
