Malaria can also be stopped by following the ABCD approach to prevention.
- Risk awareness – determine if you are at risk of contracting malaria.
2. Bite prevention – use insect repellent, cover your arms and legs, and sleep under a mosquito net to stop mosquito bites.
3. If you need to take malaria prevention tablets, make sure you take the right antimalarial tablets at the right dose and finish the course.
4. If you have a diagnosis, seek medical help right away.
While it is impossible to fully prevent mosquito bites, the less bites you get, the lower your chances of contracting malaria.
If you don’t want to get bitten, follow these steps.
- Stay somewhere with good air conditioning and doors and windows with screens. If this isn’t possible, double-check that doors and windows are properly closed.
2. Apply insect repellent to your skin and in your sleeping areas. Remember to reapply it on a regular basis. Diethyltoluamide (DEET) is the most effective repellent and is available in sprays, roll-ons, sticks, and creams.
3. Instead of skirts, opt for light, loose-fitting trousers and long-sleeved shirts. This is especially significant in the early evening and at night, when mosquitoes tend to congregate.
