The Lagos State Government has urged Members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to devise better ways to manage wastes in order to reduce environmental pollution in the state.
Mr Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, the Lagos state commissioner for the environment made the call during a courtsy visits paid him by members of MAN in Alausa on Wednesday.
He opined that manufacturers in the country could be the solution to the challenge of environmental pollution if the could make use of various opportunities available in waste recycling.
The commissioner pointed out that the environment must be made a priority by both the government and investors as this will lead to a business friendly environment.
He noted that the state government is committed to creating an environment where commerce and manufacturing can thrive.
In his words, “We have to continue to think of how to create an enabling environment and build infrastructure, so as to continue to encourage manufacturing and commerce.
“We recognise that members of your association (MAN) are employers of labour and equally generators of waste.
“Consequently, you ought to take cognizance of waste to wealth initiatives, to provide solutions and create more employment, while government builds the necessary infrastructure and creates the needed environment for business to thrive,” he said.
Speaking further, the commissioner said the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund is an example of the effort of the current administration to build and sustain local capacity by encouraging entrepreneurship ventures.
Mr Francis Meshioye, The Chairman of MAN, Ikeja branch praised the Lagos state government for maintaining a cordial relationship with MAN.
He called for better relationship with the state government and different agencies in order to ensure a better return on investment.
