Is there a difference between natural and organic products? People have recently stopped using products that contain poisonous or synthetic ingredients. In today’s economy, the cosmetic industry offers a diverse selection of products.
However, selecting the appropriate product necessitates some basic background research. Because of the type of ingredients used in their development, organic and natural products are more expensive than normal products. While the words Organic and Natural can be quite similar, they refer to two different types of products.
So what is the difference between natural and organic products?
Natural and organic products are widely regarded as safe to use. However, without knowing one’s skin type one shouldn’t go experimenting with it.
What are Organic Products?
Organic products are produced from plants without the use of fertilizers or pesticides, and organic farming methods are used. Organic products do not contain any artificial colours, additives, or fragrances. Furthermore, to preserve natural properties, the items are usually subjected to limited processing and are not checked on livestock.
The products do not contain any additives or petrochemicals, and contaminants like sulfate, parabens, silicones, SLS/SLES, and other toxins are not used in the manufacturing process. A product labelled as organic should contain at least 95% organic ingredients. GMOs and synthetic fertilizers are not used in the production of organic products.
One should not go with just the word ‘organic’ written on the products. Checking if the products are COSMOS/ECO-certified or USDA-certified organic is important. Keep in mind that the product should also contain other minerals and vitamins. Some of these could include amino acids, enzymes, fatty acids which help in keeping the skin healthy and glowing.
What are Natural Products?
Unlike organic, Natural products, on the other hand, are products made from natural sources such as plants, animals, microorganisms, fungi, bacteria, or marine organisms.
Chemicals and synthetic additives are not present in the products, but they are not inherently organic. Sulfate, parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic dyes, phthalates, and SLS/SLES, to name a few, should not be included in a high-quality natural product.
Natural products can not always be safe to use because the authenticity and consistency of the ingredients used in their manufacture are unknown without proper certification. For example, tea extracts are natural but the tea leaves might be sprayed with insecticides which will directly or indirectly affect the skin. Natural products may contain some common ingredients which particularly might affect people who have sensitive skin.
Any natural or organic product which is fragrance-based can act as an irritant for people with sensitive skin. To avoid allergic reactions and irritations to the skin, one should make sure to not just read the claims of a product but also, read the ingredients list before purchasing any organic or natural product.
