The World Health Organization, WHO has deployed 39 health personnel to help combat the cholera outbreak in some selected areas of Adamawa State.
The personnel was deployed after the recent cholera outbreak in Mubi North and Mubi South local government areas of the state.
According to Ms. Charity Warigon, a WHO Communications Officer, about 434 cases of cholera had been reported in the areas resulting in 13 deaths.
She added the personnel was sent to the affected areas to provide support and combat the outbreak.
“The outbreak has necessitated the health authority to activate an Emergency Operations Centre for concerted response and rapid decision-making.
“The transmission rate of the on-going cholera outbreak in Adamawa is indeed worrisome.
“Notwithstanding, WHO is leveraging on its past experience and lessons learned in controlling major cholera outbreaks in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.’’
Health workers in the area have however identified consumption of contaminated water as the major cause of the outbreak in the area.
A UNICEF officer who spoke with NAN said: “Test carried out on the water points showed that they are positive”.
