Retired Judge Warns NAFDAC against Approving Methyl Bromide

A retired Justice and the Coordinator of Virtues Unlimited Restorative Justice Initiative (VURJI), Justice Olamide Oloyede has appealed to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) not to approve importation of Methyl bromide.

Methyl bromide is an odorless and colorless gas that is used for pest control.

According to  the retired Justice, she had written about the negative effects of methyl bromide on humans and the environment and she sent it to the Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Moji Adeyeye and has copied other relevant agencies like the Nigerian Customs Service, the Federal Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Oloyede revealed the chemical had been ban because it was considered dangerous to human health and could cause an environmental hazard by depleting the ozone layer.

She said further that the world has not been able to control the effect of ozone layer depletion and Nigeria cannot afford to add a chemical issue to it countless challenges.

She expressed her surprise when she heard the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services denounced a warning issued by NAFDAC warning agro-users to desist from the use of methyl bromide.
