There was a widespread panic at the Peace Estate, Baruwa area of Ipaja, Lagos state yesterday after a pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC exploded, resulting in a fire outbreak.
The fire explosion was prevented from spreading to some buildings within the area by men of the Lagos State Fire Service and other rescue operators.
There were different accounts of how the explosion started. While some stated some farmers started fire to clear their farmlands where there was a spillage as a result of pipeline leakage, another account had it that one of the people scooping from the leakage three a cigarette away close to the point of leakage
Speaking about the incidence, the Lagos state commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal said: “I can see constructions close to the pipeline’s right of way. Perhaps people carry out these constructions without knowledge of the implication.”
