Retinopathy: Expert Reveals How Early Detection Can Prevent Blindness

The need for Nigerians to be more conscious of the care of the eye; with the eye being an integral part of the body has been stressed again as experts speaks on retinopathy

Rising from the 3rd annual scientific conference of the Nigeria Ophthalmic nurses association, Ogun State Chapter, with the theme; prevention and management of retinopathy: the role of ophthalmic nurse.

Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Dr. Salau Abiola said the eye condition is the disease of the retina which results in impairment or loss of vision;stressing that diabetic retinopathy is the common form of retinopathy.

He noted that early diagnoses of the condition will help control the blood sugar and loss of vision.

On her part,  Chairperson,  NONA-Ogun State,  Comrade Mojisola Bankole said Nigerians must always take care of their eye as ophthalmic nurses have the ability to apply medical and nursing intervention that fulfils visual care requirements with a primary role that lies in developing and maintaining the highest standard of care and helping patients adapt to new life style altering conditions.
