In the last five years, there has been an evolution of the natural hair movement here in Nigeria. It slowly crept on us and before we knew it, four in ten people were not ashamed to wear their natural hair anymore. Instead, they were embracing it wholeheartedly.
With this new concept that questioned everything we knew about hair care from birth, most of us had to resort to imported solutions including natural hair products. Nigeria went into a recession a few years ago; the worst it has ever seen. This forced most of us to change strategies as the exchange rate also plummeted to an all-time low. We had to look inwards for alternatives. Natural hair products weren’t left out.
Just before the recession, they were a few homegrown brands that were beginning to create a buzz in the Nigerian market today, more Nigerians are embracing these brands and also patronise them. The natural hair industry in Nigeria is still growing but there are certain brands that have been able to make a name for themselves despite all odds. In no particular order here are five Nigerian Natural Hair Brands you need to know.

Natural Nigerian began as a health and wellness website that has evolved into a natural lifestyle brand which sells natural skin care products such as oils and raw hair and body butter that were difficult to find in the country. Over time, they launched their line of products for natural hair, babies, and men’s skincare products. Run by a Certified Chemist, the Natural Nigerian hair products are in a class of its own.
African Naturalistas is also one of the premier natural hair brands. At that time, they had an entire line of natural hair products which quickly made them a one-stop shop for all things natural hair. The brand is run by a Certified Formulator. Over time the brand has expanded with a line of new products. Word on the street is their Hair Mayonnaise pure magic for kinky hair!

For the longest time, Olori Cosmetics had just one single flagship product; their Damage Be Gone Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment. As a result, all effort was put into it to make it the best it could possibly be. It’s no wonder it quickly became a household fan favourite. In recent times, they have expanded to include a Conditioning Shampoo and a soon to be released Hair Butter.

Namaste Organics was founded in 2010 and became known for their natural hair and skin care products which are predominantly made from shea butter, aloe vera and a host of exotic oils such as Mandarin and May Chang oils. With the introduction of their new products, they have included a range of conditioners and gels to give your natural hair a whole new experience.
Unlike the other brands based in Lagos, Nigeria, AfroRiri operates out of Calabar in Akwa Ibom state. They are touted as ‘amazing luxe organic hair growth products’ and we believe them. With their range of hair care products including two variations of shampoos and conditioners which you can choose from, achieving healthier hair shouldn’t be difficult.
It is important to note that these are established brands that have been around for a while now. They are quite different from emerging brands which are recently launched.
