The Kaduna state Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Maigari has reiterated the commitment of the state government towards improving the agricultural sector of the state.
Speaking at a sensitization workshop of stakeholders held in Kaduna on the value of the Sunflower farming, he said sunflower farming is important as it contributes greatly to global trade for Nigeria.
He encouraged farmers to take hold of the opportunity as sunflower as capable of driving the economy to a greater height.
Maigari said, “This is a welcome idea and a wake-up call to Nigeria because sunflower alone can drive the economy of Nigeria to greater heights.”
“Nigeria is endowed with the right climate, hence the need for the workshops to be pragmatic as possible.
“I expect guidelines that would yield positive results; let’s not make it a talk show, let’s make sure we set goals that are timely.”
He assured the government is ready to grant the farmers necessary support, adding the state government has already invested in the anchor borrowers’ programme where 12,000 farmers were assisted.
“Ensure that you do what you need to do to make a profit and also ensure that whatever facilities you get as support is paid back.
“This is the only way you can continue to grow; do the needful, payback and get more so that you can continue to access more,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Maimuna Habibu, the representative of the Director General of the Nigeria Agriculture Quarantine Service (NAQS) said the event was an important one as sunflower oil is now an emerging commodity in the international market.
“We encourage Nigerian farmers to plant and harvest it so as to process it into oil and export it.
“That is why we gathered farmers from the North West and North Central to tell them what to do, so as to get good quality products for exports,” Babibu aid.
