A female health worker in Ondo state identified as Rasheedat Mohammed has reportedly lost her life to the dreaded disease Lassa fever.
The deceased who was a laboratory attendant was reported to have been infected with the disease while she was on a visit to relatives who had earlier been infected in Port Harcourt.
The workers of the hospital had however raised an alarm over alleged insensitivity of the management to protect the staff against such disease.
It was alleged the hospital management got a wind of the case and it was reported to the Chief Medical Director of the hospital Dr. Akinwumi Akinbodewa who failed to give directive for medical examination for the workers.
One of the workers who spoke under the condition of anonymity said ““the kidney care centre were currently working in fear. We don’t know what to do, one of us has been killed by Lassa Fever.
“We have appealed to the management to conduct at medical test for us but the CMD did not want us to cry out because of the image of the hospital and the state but our own life is at risk now.
“We expected the hospital to have taken our blood sample to Irrua Specialists Hospital to check whether any of us had been infected or not but they have done nothing about it.”
The commissioner for health in Ondo state, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro however denied the incidence saying there is no case of Lassa fever in the state.
He confirmed the death of the health worker but said the deceased died of complications as a result of liver problem.
The Chief Medical Officer of the hospital declined to comment on the incident.
