The Nigeria ophthalmic nurses association has called on both the federal and state governments to provide more training institutions for workers in the care of the eyes.
The National Chairman of the association, Stephen Lamiya made the appeal at their 33 annual national scientific conference in Ilorin, Kwara state.
The national chairman of the association, while comparing the number of patients with those in need of eye care noted the ratio of eye workers to the number of patients is too low to take care of their eye needs.
Speaking further, he disclosed the number of ophthalmologists in the country is lower than the world health organization’s requirement.
Lamiya said providing more training institutions and retraining of ophthalmic doctors and nurses will fill in the gap.
