World Health Organization (WHO) has said a medical doctor in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been hospitalized as a result of Ebola infection.
The organization further said 97 of the people the sick doctor had contact with have been identified in the area that is presently surrounded by armed militia.
Dr. Peter Salama, WHO deputy director-general for emergency preparedness and response in a news conference said, “It is the first time we have a confirmed case and contacts in an area of high insecurity.
“It is really the problem we were anticipating and at the same time dreading.”
Speaking further, he said there are great security concerns in the are and the place is now surrounded by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) Ugandan Islamist militia.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, 61 deaths have been recorded as a result of the latest outbreak of Ebola in the country.
Records at the health ministry’s General Directorate for Combatting Disease revealed there are 103 cases of Ebola in the eastern region of DRC as at August 22, out of which 76 were confirmed by laboratory tests.
The new outbreak started in Mangina North Kivu province on the 1st of August.
This will be the 10th outbreak of Ebola since the virus was first identified in 1976
