The Chief Medical of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Prof. Lawal Khalid, has revealed the institution is ready to carry out its first open heart surgery by the end of September.
Prof. Khalid made this known while addressing reporters in Zaria yesterday.
Speaking further, he said ABUTH will carry out the surgery in conjunction with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) which is the national open heart surgery center in Nigeria.
He noted that the hospital has a cardiothoracic center that has been furnished with the state of art equipment, noting this is the first time an open heart surgery will be carried out in the northern part of the country.
Speaking on more advancements in the institution, Prof Khalid said ABUTH is a center of excellence as far as oncology treatment is concerned, adding the plan to establish a linear treatment center for advanced radiation treatment for cancer patients is near completion.
He between 1,500 and 1,800 new cancer patients registers at the hospital.
He, however, bemoaned lack of basic diagnostic equipment like CT scan machine as well as poor funding for overhead cost.
