3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Losing Weight

In 2014 I lost 40kg! YESSSS!!! I knowwww!

I went from 110kg to 70kg in 10 months!!!! YESSSS!!!! I knowwwww!!!

I was able to achieve this without going to the gym, without getting a personal trainer or doing on quick fix diets! YESSSSSSSSSSS!!! I know!

I did it on my own, at home with a change of lifestyle.

I changed my food and worked my butt off almost every day.

YES! I know, I am amazing!

Looking back, there are 3 things I wish I knew before I decided to lose weight. So if you have been flirting with the idea of losing weight, then this article will serve you.

Have Short-Term Goals

It is easy to get distracted with big goals like wanting to lose 40kg! But when you are very far from that goal, you might end up discouraged than encouraged. Trust me, there will be days when you will be all sore and cranky that you will think it better to just give up and when it comes to making major changes like this the best way to keep going and stay encouraged is to set short-term little goals like losing 1kg a week.

When you focus all your energy on losing just 1kg a week, you are more likely to hit that goal and smash it than waking up daily wanting to lose so much weight. Accomplishing these little goals build your confidence level, it improves your self-trust and encourages you to keep going. So bring out your calendar and set your weekly, monthly goals over the next 1 year and watch yourself smash them!

Have Long-Term Goals

Short term goals are cute but long-term goals keep you going when your short-term goals have been smashed. As a Health Coach, I have worked with over 1,000 people and one thing most have in common is not having long-term goals. I have people wanting to lose weight to fit into a wedding dress, wanting to look good for their birthdays, and most of them do achieve these goals and right after the date is passed they are back to where they were and sometimes even in a worse place. You have people who wanted to lose 5kg for the graduation, losing 5kg from starvation and two weeks after graduating have gone on to add 8kg, the 5kg they lost initially and 3kg extra! Like I said, short-term goals are cute but long-term goals keep you going after you have smashed your short-term goals

Know Your Why

Why do you want to lose weight? Is it strong enough? Is it compelling enough? Will your why practically grab you by the legs in the morning and get you to get up and do right by you when you are tired, sore and demotivated?

Before losing 40kg I had tried to lose weight but I was never able to get past a day, I never had a compelling reason until my ex-boyfriend gave me the talking of my life that I will never forget and I was ready to die trying to prove to him that I could be slim, sexy and strong. Great huh?

Well, you have to give it to me, the reason was compelling! I mean… there were days when I could barely move from all the aches and pains. I had legitimate reasons to take a break but just imagining the look on my exes face when he sees me hot was enough to get me sweating like a pig in 5 minutes. The challenge however with this was, after losing 40kg and meeting up with my ex, I felt empty. Don’t get me wrong, he was super impressed and proud but when I got home and looked in the mirror, it all seemed pointless. All the excitement was all in the moment, I did not even understand why I had just dedicated 10 months of my existence trying to prove to someone outside myself that I could accomplish something. It did not end there, I had mild depression and went on a binging spree. After all, I had no point to prove to anyone, I had accomplished my goal and now I could rest. It took me adding 10kg to realise what was going on. Don’t let this be you, losing weight is hard enough, losing weight, adding it back is even worse. So as much as you can, determine your why from the get-go, make it compelling but more than compelling, make it for you and no one else. That is how to keep it sustainable
