According to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the north-eastern part of Nigeria needs an urgent intervention in order to curtail a looming food crisis in the region.
Reports from the office show about 3 million Nigerians are in serious need of food and nutrition. This figure was reached following a recent assessment exercise in the area.
Earlier reports show that about 1.7 million persons lost their homes and were displaced as a result of the conflicts in the region in the past nine years.
The UN office assured humanitarian partners are putting in concerted efforts in Borno and Yobe to ensure food assistance reach the vulnerable.
“About USD41.7 million is urgently needed to ensure sufficient preparedness and response activities to facilitate life-saving assistance for the new arrivals,” the report said.
Resources to support up to 463,000 vulnerable persons in places like Bama, Damasak and Rann are being mobilized by the agency.
OCHA further noted that it had already commenced distribution of life-saving items including food, seeds, medicines, emergency shelter, non-food items and hygiene kits.
The UN humanitarian body expressed satisfaction with effective response to control cholera outbreak in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, recorded between February and May 2018.
