Nigeria has been rated with the second largest burden of Tuberculosis in Africa and the fourth in the world as 420 people die from the disease on a daily basis.
This statistic was revealed recently during the Public Private Mix (PPM) summit for Tuberculosis control held in Lagos.
The summit evaluated the involvement of the private sector in the control of TB in Nigeria, especially the involvement of the Agbami parties which comprise of NNPC, Chevron, Famfa Oil, Petrobras, and Statoil.
Adebola Lawson, the Coordinator of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control programme revealed the high rate of TB disease in Nigeria is alarming but it is unfortunate that many people are displaying a nonchalant attitude about it.
According to her, she said, “TB kills more people than plane crash and we can put in place measure to safeguard the aviation industry, we need to checkmate the spread of TB”.
Speaking further, she said there are over 300,000 cases of Undiagnosed tuberculosis and three in four patients are not on treatment, making them capable of infecting 10 to 15 more people each.
